Learn how to find your unique website design style as a beginner with this quick and easy how-to piece. Follow the steps I used to carve out my own web design style in a saturated creative market and build a multiple-six-figure online design business: Bold x Boho.
It can be tough to start web design as a beginner. Trust me, three years ago, that was me. Completely new to the game, stary-eyed, and hopeful to make a living with web design. However, my journey wasn’t the straightest path in the book. In fact, it was pretty rough, rowdy, and even a bit bumpy.
Yours doesn’t have to be too. I’m teaching everything I’ve learned from my three years in business. From making minimum wage to six figures, I can help you get a leg up on your competition. But first, you need a bulletproof, unique web design style.
The Importance of Discovering Your Own Web Design Style
As a beginner website designer, it’s natural to scroll through so many different styles of design, drawing inspiration from Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, and more. You love High Moon Studio, or that quirky artist-turned-designer on Instagram, or some crazy-talented developer from across the world. They’ve all got little quirks and ideas and hidden talents that have you saying, “I want that, too”.
The sooner you find out what your unique website design style is, the sooner you’ll be attracting the work and the people you love. A web design style can also help you:
Niche down and carve your messaging to suit the clients you want to work with
Increase efficiency in your design style, so you can replicate the process every time
Ensure you’re proud of and enjoy the work you create
So, here’s exactly how you can create your own design style:
Step 1: Pin It
Pinterest is a stage for the world’s most talented and creative minds – including yours! This week? Swap out a few afternoons of wedding, interiors, and recipe Pinning for a fresh board filled with website designs you love.
Start broad with general descriptive words, then narrow down. Some search ideas to inspire you could include:
Bohemian
Dreamy
Feminine or masculine
Minimal
Monochromatic
Unique/eclectic
Adventurous
Modern
Cute and playful
Don’t be afraid to Pin it all at this stage. But ultimately? The rule here is to focus on searches that describe the style of digital content you love to consume. After all, you want to create designs YOU love to look at as much as your clients.
Step 2: Clear It
A few Sunday Pin sessions in, and that board is starting to get noisy. From this point, it’s time to shortlist and find the design commonality.
While you certainly don’t have to stick to just one style, I suggest narrowing it down to a maximum of three. To shortlist your styles, use Pinterest’s ‘Sections’ function to sort each Pin into the relevant design style. For example:
Minimal
Boho
Hand-drawn
Ensure all the Pins are sorted into the appropriate aesthetic and get brutal about which just don’t fit. This opens you up to growth and clarity.
The only way to be certain you love your shortlisted style/s is to practice designing them! Here’s how:
Brainstorm Your Dream Client Persona:
Step 1 of practice, find your target audience. In my opinion, this is where the real fun begins.
Find some of your dream clients. What niche are they in? What type of business do they run? Here are some more considerations to keep in mind when building a client persona:
Their name, location, humanizing traits
Values and interests
Industry and business type
Business name, audience, and services/products
Business and website goals
Mockup Their Brand Board
Next, you’ll need to create a brand board for your “dream client.” This is all for practice so have some fun with it (but don’t forget that you can use this for your future portfolio)!
If you’re stuck, start with these things:
Wordmark logo
Typeface
Color scheme
Take it Over To Your Design Platform
Now, you can actually start designing your client’s site. I use a platform called Showit, which I recommend for everyone based on its customizability and ease of use.
If you’re completely new to web design and finding your web design style is your first step in the process, don’t worry. I’ve got an entire course that’ll teach you all the skills needed to master web design. I’ll take you through navigating the platform, building pages with confidence, and using integrations without a problem. Learn more about the CEO of Showit Course here.
Now, here’s how I recommend designing the site:
Take your brand board and infuse it into your website design, following the stylistic characteristics of your inspiration.
Start with the home page, then move through to services, about, contact, and sales.
Add on small design flairs and experiment with movement, animation, shadowing, and popups at this stage, too.
Don’t forget to view your design on mobile to see which design elements click in a smaller view (and which might not)

Tune in Creativity and Tune Out Distractions
If you want to create something that’s completely unique to you, then you need to be your most creative self. Close your other tabs (especially Pinterest) and just experiment. After some time, and maybe it takes a long time, you’ll find something that truly works for you. And trust me, when you do, it’ll be so worth it.
Put everything you create into your portfolio. After all, these are what you want to be known for as a beginner website designer—why would you half-ass it? I’m talking about applying a high-level, multi-six-figure-worthy approach to everything from the depth of detail on each page to the logical process behind your design workflow.
Be Versatile
When I launched my website design business after following this process, every website I designed oozed ‘boho’. Years on? I’ve happily expanded and strayed from that comfort zone. But it wasn’t without spending my first few months deep in that unique web design style.
It’s what allowed me to gain traction, establish my name, find my flow, and connect with the clients I craved. To this day, boho, bold designs remain my foundational style, but I’ve now grown the confidence to step away from that when needed. One day, you’ll be able to as well! As a multi-passionate creative, you threw away any ‘box’ people placed you in at birth. And your approach to website design can be exactly the same. There are no rules!
But finding your zone of genius when it comes to your unique website design style is crucial to building your brand, attracting your dream clients, and mastering your workflow.

Success was never a question for me. Even after dropping out of high school and living the “digital nomad” lifestyle with absolutely no plan in place, I knew for a fact that there were big things waiting for me. When I found the online space in 2016, everything clicked. Starting as a VA, I finally found something that I could do while traveling the world (which is all I’ve ever really wanted out of life). But despite the fact that I was no longer tied down to a place of work, I was still limited in my income and feeling creatively unfulfilled. When I finally decided to allow myself to be the passionate creative that I am deep down, and took the plunge into the world of website design, everything changed for me. I work on my own time, with unlimited income potential, designing websites for passionate entrepreneurs, and I can teach you to do the same.
If you’re wondering where life could take you as a creative who feels allergic to the 9-5 lifestyle, I’d like to welcome you into my family. I gave a resounding “f*ck no” to the “traditional” a long time ago, and I’ve seen just how beautiful it can be when you chase your passions and turn them into massive profit.
150+ websites, 1,300+ students, and MILLIONS of dollars earned by my students… that’s a recipe for living a life that you’re excited to brag about.
High school dropout turned creative multi-millionaire.
Letting you in on the secrets to living your best damn life.
Learning web design took me from a struggling waitress making $11 an hour, to a seven-figure creative designer in less than 5 years. I can teach you exactly how to follow in my footsteps...
