Being a web designer ain’t always easy, but what makes those days a little easier is the ultimate trifecta to see you through. Here are the three must-haves for every web design business.

Today I’m going to give you a brief rundown on the three main things I focused on when scaling my business: a top-notch marketing plan, incredible customer experience, and killer design skills.

The Three Pillars of Successful Web Design Businesses
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again (and again). The only way to succeed in this biz (and preserve your sanity) is with three crucial items. Here they here:
1. A Money-Making Marketing Plan
Just like any business, to get the best experience (and value) of your time, you’ll need a money-making marketing plan. A killer strategy will magnetically attract those dream clients, win them over, and secure more of them as you scale, and scale…and scale again.

Here’s what you should think about:
- Narrow Down Your Target Audience: Niche down. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, and that’s for a reason—it’s true. You’ll want to target a specific customer so that you can provide them with the perfect service tailored just for them. A fun activity to “niche down” is to create your customer persona or a semi-fictional description (and maybe even a picture) of your dream client.
- Align All Your Messaging & Offerings: The second thing you need to consider is your messaging and offerings. You want to make sure everything is in complete alignment and furthering the story of your brand. Double-check all copy in your email marketing, sales pages, and communication with clients, so everything is on brand.
- Diversify Your Income: Being a successful web designer is great and all, but you’re still tied to your service. That means all your time off is unpaid… To get over this hurdle, I recommend starting a passive income stream.

2. An Unforgettable Client Experience
So, you’ve got your strategy all set. What’s next?
Your clients. To create a business worth shouting about, you’ll need to leave each customer in awe. Make them want more. Give them a high-touch experience that shows them you’re worth every cent.
This effortless—but SO much effort—client experience is all in the subtle touches. It’s the packaging, emails, and your website.

Do you want the honest truth? You’re never going to make a living with web design if you don’t have the chops.
